Your browser's built-in speech recognition transcribes the word as you say it, then we compare that transcript to the target — by spelling and by sound — and show a 0-100 score. It measures what the recognizer heard, not your accent directly.
PronounceIt itself never receives or stores your audio. The scoring uses the Web Speech API, and in Chrome, Edge and Safari that API sends the microphone audio to the browser vendor’s speech service to transcribe it, under that vendor’s privacy policy. The separate Record & Compare feature does stay entirely in your browser.
Chrome, Edge, and Safari support the speech recognition this tool needs. Firefox does not yet, so the scoring card is hidden there — you can still hear the correct pronunciation.
No. The score is computed in your browser by comparing the transcript to the target word with an edit-distance measure and a phonetic (double-metaphone) match, blended with the recognizer’s own confidence. There is no language model involved, and no acoustic analysis of your voice.
