Why You Can’t Hear the Difference Between Two English Sounds
If “ship” and “sheep” sound identical to you, your ears are working fine — your brain is filing both under one sound from your first language. Here’s why, and how to retrain it.

If “ship” and “sheep” sound identical to you, your hearing is fine. Your brain is doing something it learned in infancy: filing both sounds under one category from your first language, and discarding the difference before you become conscious of it. That is a perception problem, not an ear problem — and it is trainable.
What your brain is doing
Every language uses a subset of possible speech sounds, and treats certain differences as meaningful while ignoring others. As an infant you learned which differences matter in your language and became efficient at discarding the rest. That efficiency is why you can understand speech in noise, over a bad phone line, in unfamiliar accents.
The cost shows up later. If your first language has one sound where English has two, your perceptual system maps both English sounds onto that single category. You are not failing to listen carefully — the distinction is being filtered out upstream of conscious attention.
The practical consequence is the important part: you cannot reliably produce a distinction you cannot hear. If you try to fix your pronunciation by repetition alone, you have no way to tell a correct attempt from an incorrect one. Perception has to come first, or at least alongside.
Which pairs will be hard for you
This is predictable from your first language rather than random:

Why minimal pairs are the right tool
A minimal pair is two words differing by exactly one sound: ship/sheep, bat/bad, think/sink. Everything else about the words is held constant, so the single contrast is the only thing your attention can land on.
Practising an isolated vowel does not work as well, for a reason worth understanding: in isolation there is nothing to compare against, so your existing category simply absorbs whatever you hear. The contrast is what creates the pressure to split one category into two.
This is also why listening practice must come before or alongside speaking practice, not after it. Producing a sound you cannot perceive means you are guessing, and repeated guessing reinforces whatever you happened to do.
A method that works
- Identification, not production. Have the two words played and decide which one you heard. No speaking. You are asking your perceptual system to make a judgment it currently refuses to make. Our minimal pairs game does exactly this — it plays one word and you pick.
- Accept that it feels like guessing at first. Early on you will be near chance. That is the expected starting point, not evidence that you cannot learn it.
- Short and frequent beats long and rare. Five minutes daily does more than an hour once a week. Perceptual retuning is a consolidation process; it needs repeated exposure over days.
- Vary the voices. If you only ever train on one speaker you may learn that speaker rather than the contrast. Our word pages offer four accents — use more than one.
- Only then produce. Once you can identify reliably, record yourself and compare. The checker is useful here for a blunt reason: it tells you which word a speech recogniser thinks you said, which is independent of your own biased hearing.
What to expect
Two honest expectations, because unrealistic ones cause people to quit:
- Progress is uneven. You will have days where a contrast you had seemingly mastered collapses again. That is normal in perceptual learning and not a sign of regression.
- Adults learn this more slowly than children, but they do learn it. The idea that adult perception is fixed is overstated; the honest version is that it takes deliberate practice rather than mere exposure. Living in a country for years without focused attention often produces very little change — which is exactly why targeted drills work better than passive immersion for this specific skill.
Also worth knowing: you do not need every contrast. Some carry heavy meaning loads (ship/sheep, light/right) and some almost none. Prioritise the ones that create real confusion in your own conversations — that is the fastest route to being understood, which is the actual goal. See do you need to lose your accent.
