Hindi speakers have an advantage — huge sound inventory, full stress system. The famous challenges: V/W merging, retroflex T/D, and full vowels where English wants schwa.
Separate V from W — it's the single most recognized marker of Indian-accented English, and two weeks of vest/west drills fixes it.
Why it happens: Hindi has one sound between V and W, so "vest" and "west" merge.
The fix: V: teeth touch lip and buzz. W: round lips, touch nothing. Drill vest/west daily.
Full guide to /v/ with practice words →Why it happens: Hindi T/D are retroflex (tongue curled back), which colors English T/D.
The fix: Touch the flat tongue TIP to the ridge just behind the teeth — don't curl it.
Full guide to /t/ with practice words →Why it happens: Syllable-timed rhythm gives every vowel full weight.
The fix: Exaggerate stress: "PHO-tuh-gruh-fee", not "pho-to-gra-phy".
Full guide to /ə/ with practice words →Why it happens: Hindi replaces TH with an aspirated T: "think" → "t'ink".
The fix: The tongue must poke OUT between the teeth with soft airflow.
Full guide to /θ/ with practice words →Why it happens: Z can slip toward J in some regions: "zero" → "jero".
The fix: Z is a buzzing S — teeth close, tongue never touches the ridge.
Full guide to /z/ with practice words →Why it happens: O-family vowels merge; "caught", "coat" and "cot" blur.
The fix: AW is long with rounded lips held steady; long O glides toward "oo".
